Electrical contractors all over North America are jumping into the electrification boom (and the billions of dollars in federal funding coming with it) by building a business around site assessments, usually called “site walks” in the industry.

Condoit Site WalkA site walk is an in-person walk through of a facility, performed by an electrician alongside a facility manager and includes electrical rooms, utility connections, proposed upgrade sites, and any other areas that need consideration.

A site walk report, created after a site walk, is a general overview of a facility’s infrastructure specifically as it relates to the electrical system. This site walk report is usually an 8.5″ x 11” PDF that can be circulated via email to all interested parties. A site walk is the first step in understanding the scope of work for a new installation, like an EV charging station, solar array, battery backup, or any other electrical upgrade.

Many contractors taking advantage of this new revenue stream will initially lean on current and existing customer lists to begin the sales process. Most, if not all, of the customers you’ve worked with over the years are currently thinking about installing EV charging stations or some other electrical upgrade. Now is a great time to reach out to them and see if you can be of service.

As demand for these services increases, we’re frequently seeing electrical contractors charging for site walks. Depending on the scale of the potential project and the granularity of the site walk report, site walks may cost up to several hundred dollars.

This is a great way to use reliable apprentices or other employees who may not be trained to install electrical equipment but are capable of collecting information for future projects. Many companies are dealing with soaring materials costs or long lead times. Site walks are a great opportunity to book revenue without the need for a materials cost.

Electrical contractors are also finding that performing a site walk for a facility customer leads to work requests, a punch list of fixes that had been forgotten, and makes you more sticky with their customer. Being proactive by reaching out to them reminds them of who they can count on for service and upgrades.

Condoit’s digital tool for site walks, single line as-builts, new designs and bills-of-materials help to standardize, centralize, and speed up these site walks by putting them all on one, cloud-based, digital platform that’s easily accessible by a mobile device or web browser. Condoit also creates site walk reports in a matter of seconds after the visit is over and allows supervisors to review what’s been collected in real time and before the tech leaves the site.

Is it time your company considered site walks as a potential revenue stream?
